Ready, set, create! miniMakers are your opportunity to dive into different art mediums once a month at MOCA. Workshops are for families with children ages 6-12, designed around artists, art history, and current MOCA Exhibitions. 

To celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month, kids will learn how to fold, cut, and assemble a simple 8-page zine from a single sheet of paper, then fill it with their own drawings, words, comics, or collage, whatever they want to say or share. Along the way, we'll talk about zines as a tradition of independent, DIY storytelling and self-expression, and how artists have long used simple materials to share their voice with the world.

Inspired by the figures and theatrical energy in Geoffrey Holder’s paintings, families will use mini posable figures to explore how a body can tell a story through gesture, posture, and movement. Participants will pose a figure, make a simple observational drawing, then use color and collage to turn it into a bold imagined performer, character, or scene.

In 1982, Geoffrey Holder designed the costumes and set for Dance Theatre of Harlem's Firebird trading the ballet's icy palette for the heat of the Caribbean: electric orange, deep green, and vibrant magenta. Kids build their own layered wing and feather shapes assembled into a small hanging mobile that spins and catches the light, the way Holder's costumes danced on stage.

Geoffrey Holder spent his life capturing dance in motion, as a performer, choreographer, and costume designer who thought constantly about how the body and fabric move together on stage. Kids build a simple paper figure with jointed, movable limbs — arms, legs, maybe a head — using brass fasteners at each joint, then pose it mid-movement to capture a single frozen moment of dance.

Celebrate the color, creativity, and history of Carnival with a hands-on costume-making session! Kids will design and build their own mini costume piece using feathers, fabric scraps, sequins, and other festive materials. Along the way, we'll explore Carnival's roots in the African diaspora and its role as a powerful tradition of self-expression, resistance, and celebration across the Caribbean and beyond.
