Kendall “King” Friday is a self-taught musician, producer, and songwriter with over 15 years of experience shaping sound rooted in the musical traditions of the American South. Originally from Alabama, Friday’s artistry draws deeply from the region’s rich lineage of R&B, soul, funk, gospel, and jazz — genres that inform both his musical sensibility and his commitment to groove, feel, and emotional honesty.
As the bandleader of Weeks End, Friday creates live performances that center on connection and collective energy. The group blends live instrumentation with modern production approaches, working with a flexible lineup of collaborators that allows each performance to evolve naturally. Rather than replicating fixed arrangements, Weeks End thrives on spontaneity — letting rhythm, improvisation, and audience response guide the music in real time.
Friday’s self-directed musical journey has shaped him into a versatile artist and bandleader known for his intuitive ear, collaborative spirit, and deep respect for live performance as a shared experience. Influenced by gospel traditions, Southern soul, and jazz improvisation, his work bridges past and present, honoring musical roots while remaining open to experimentation and contemporary sound.
Through Weeks End, Kendall “King” Friday continues to build performances that feel immersive, responsive, and grounded in rhythm — inviting listeners into a space where music unfolds organically, and community is part of the sound. His appearance at Jazz at MOCA reflects a dedication to live music as an evolving conversation between musicians and audience.
